Can you go into debt on Robinhood?
If you're charged a fee and you don't have enough brokerage cash in your account to cover it, you may have an account deficit. Some of the most common fees that cause customers to have an account deficit are Robinhood Gold fees and fees associated with American Depositary Receipts (ADRs).
We'll generally decline transactions that make you go negative if you don't have enough available cash, including any available margin credit, to cover it. We don't charge you anything for getting declined for insufficient funds.
Robinhood is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corp. (SIPC). This means that any loss of an investor's securities (e.g., stocks and bonds) and cash held by Robinhood is protected up to $500,000 in the event the firm fails or goes out of business. This includes up to $250,000 protection for cash holdings.
Can You End Up in Debt If a Stock Goes Down? In a standard cash account, you can't end up in debt if a stock goes down. However, if you're trading on margin, that's a different story. Margin accounts can lead to debt if you're not careful.
Robinhood Markets annual net long-term debt for 2021 was $3.552B, a INF% increase from 2020.
If you fail to meet your minimums, Robinhood Financial may be forced to sell some or all of your securities, with or without your prior approval. Robinhood Financial charges a standard margin interest rate of 12% and a margin interest rate of 8% for customers who subscribe to Gold.
Next, the lender may report the late payment to credit bureaus, which can negatively impact the borrower's credit score. Finally, a delinquent debt may eventually go into default. At this time, the lender might sell the debt to a collection agency or take legal action against the borrower.
One caveat here: if you are buying stocks on margin, you can lose more than your initial investment. On the contrary, you must pay cash for long options, and cannot buy them using margin.
Delisting is when a stock is removed from an exchange. Here's what can happen if a security you own becomes delisted: The security's margin requirement can change. Because the security no longer trades on the same exchanges, a national best bid and offer (NBBO) no longer exists.
Day trading on Robinhood can be an exciting way to potentially profit from short-term market movements. However, the Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule requires traders to maintain a minimum account balance of $25,000.
Do I owe money if stock goes negative?
No. A stock price can't go negative, or, that is, fall below zero. So an investor does not owe anyone money. They will, however, lose whatever money they invested in the stock if the stock falls to zero.
Can a stock ever rebound after it has gone to zero? Yes, but unlikely. A more typical example is the corporate shell gets zeroed and a new company is vended [sold] into the shell (the legal entity that remains after the bankruptcy) and the company begins trading again.
When a stock's price falls to zero, a shareholder's holdings in this stock become worthless. Major stock exchanges actually delist shares once they fall below specific price values.
Your securities and cash are protected by SIPC
Robinhood Financial LLC and Robinhood Securities, LLC are both members of SIPC, which protects securities for customers of its members up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for claims for cash) for each investing account, including IRAs.
Do you actually own the stock on Robinhood? Investors do own the shares of stocks and ETFs purchased on the Robinhood platform. This is the same type of stock ownership you get when you purchase stocks through most other brokerage companies.
Yes, interest on your uninvested brokerage cash that is swept to the program banks will be compounded daily. Each day, you earn interest on your balance, and that earned interest itself also earns interest. Over time, your uninvested brokerage cash multiplies and grows on its own.
We're legally required to ensure that all Robinhood customers certify their tax status. For US customers, we're generally not required to withhold taxes on proceeds, such as from sales, interest, and dividends. If you don't certify your tax status, you may be subject to backup withholding.
So can you owe money on stocks? Yes, if you use leverage by borrowing money from your broker with a margin account, then you can end up owing more than the stock is worth.
Capital gains tax rate | 2022 Taxable income | 2023 Taxable income |
---|---|---|
10% | $0 to $10,275 | $0 to $11,000 |
12% | $10,276 to $41,775 | $11,001 to $44,725 |
22% | $41,776 to $89,075 | $44,726 to $95,375 |
24% | $89,076 to $170,050 | $95,376 to $182,100 |
In most cases, stocks and brokerage accounts can be garnished by a creditor with a money judgment. However, sometimes a brokerage account may be exempt from garnishment due to federal or state law.
What happens when you have 25,000 in Robinhood?
This will allow you to continue day trading and participating in the Stock Lending and Brokerage cash sweep programs. Maintain $25,000 in portfolio value. This won't prevent a PDT flag, but will enable you to continue day trading if you do get flagged. Keep in mind crypto does not count towards the $25,000 requirement.
As I mentioned above, your trading is restricted to unlimited day trades unless you have an equity balance of at least $25,000 in your account. For Robinhood Instant or Robinhood Gold accounts, you're limited to no more than three-day trades in a sliding five-day trading window.

Though delisting does not affect your ownership, shares may not hold any value post-delisting. Thus, if any of the stocks that you own get delisted, it is better to sell your shares. You can either exit the market or sell it to the company when it announces buyback.
Investors holding shares after a delisting will only be able to sell them OTC. That generally means less liquidity, finding it harder to locate buyers at the price you want, and potentially being left in the dark about what the company is up to. Nasdaq.
