The Devon blue is a lovely smaller Hybrid chicken they are prolific layers giving up to 300 blue eggs a year! They are docile and very friendly chickens, they have naturally inquisitive natures and will be happy following you around the garden.
There are three breeds that lay blue eggs: Ameraucanas, Araucanas and Cream Legbars. The blue color is created by oocyanin, which is applied early in the laying process. The blue pigment goes right through the shell, unlike the brown pigment. So blue eggs are blue inside and out.
Once an Easter Egger hen starts laying, she will lay the same color egg for life, but not always blue. Some Easter Eggers lay pinkish or tan eggs instead. Hence, the name "Easter" Eggers. So to guarantee that you'll get blue eggs, you'll need to choose either Ameraucana, Araucana or Cream Legbar chickens.

The color of an egg shell has influence on people's buying choices. Some believe that brown, green, blue, or pink eggs are healthier than white chicken eggs. The truth is, there is no nutritional difference between colorful chicken eggs and white chicken eggs.
When a hen and rooster are mated, genes from both parents contribute to the eggshell color laid by their offspring. Some of the most popular crosses are called Easter Egger or Olive Egger chickens. Easter Eggers can lay a variety of egg colors, from blue to green and sometimes even pink.
Do Leghorn chickens lay blue eggs?

White Leghorns lay white eggs. New Hampshire hens lay brown eggs. The ever popular Ameraucanas lay blue eggs.
Friendly and curious, Super Blues are prolific layers of large, blue-tinted eggs, averaging five to six eggs a week, even during the heat of summer. Typically, Super Blue hens begin laying at 22-24 weeks of age. Bear in mind that they tend to be broody! On average, 15/16 pullets will lay blue eggs when they mature.

With Araucana chickens, and other breeds laying colored eggs, the genetic code left behind by the retrovirus many generations ago resulted in blue-shelled eggs. The chickens are not spreading the virus, but rather, the virus is just a harmless part of their genetic story.
Cream/Pinkish Eggs
Light Sussex, Mottled Javas, Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Silkies, and Faverolles all lay a pinkish-cream egg. As noted above, some Easter Eggers will also lay cream or pink eggs, while others will lay green or bluish eggs.
Ameraucanas have beards AND muffs, Araucanas can have ear tufts. While Ameraucanas are more common in the United States than Araucanas, they are available primarily through reputable breeders. If you are in the market for Ameraucanas and see an advertisem*nt for “Americanas,” be forewarned: there is no such breed.
