Is investing $10 in stocks worth it?
The $10 a day adds up to $3,650 a year -- which is a pretty good sum of money. And, once you have invested that money, you get to benefit from compound growth. That's when your investments earn returns that are reinvested so you earn even more money going forward.
The number of shares you should buy depends on the price of the stock and how much money you are willing to invest. For example, if a stock is worth $10 and you have a $10,000 portfolio, a good number of shares would be between 20 to 100 depending on your risk tolerance.
Calculating How Much to Invest
A common rule of thumb is the 50-30-20 rule, which suggests allocating 50% of your after-tax income to essentials, 30% to discretionary spending and 20% to savings and investments. Within that 20% allocation, the portion designated for stocks depends on your risk tolerance.
You don't have to be rich to invest in the stock market. Even with just one dollar, you can start building your portfolio.
You can honestly get started investing with any amount, even $5. However, if you invest with just $5, it's tough to have many options that can grow your money. And even seeing a 100% return on your investment will only grow that $5 into $10.
$10 a week for 10 years
Since there are 520 weeks in a 10-year period, you would eventually have $5,200 to spend. However, if you invest that same $10 per week for 520 weeks, and that investment earns an average return of 7%, your savings will grow to $7,129.
For example, if the average yield is 3%, that's what we'll use for our calculations. Keep in mind, yields vary based on the investment. Calculate the Investment Needed: To earn $1,000 per month, or $12,000 per year, at a 3% yield, you'd need to invest a total of about $400,000.
A portfolio of 10 or more stocks, particularly those across various sectors or industries, is much less risky than a portfolio of only two stocks.
The screen focuses on revenue growth above 10%. "We screen for S&P 500 stocks that grew sales by at least 10% during each of the previous two years and are expected to grow sales by at least 10% in the current year and each of the next two years," Goldman Sachs' David Kostin said.
If investing 15% of your income sounds like more than your budget can handle, you can start with a set dollar amount and be consistent about it. Investing even a few dollars each month can sometimes be enough to see a return if you're using the right investment strategy.
Should I invest or save?
The simple rule: If you need the money in the next three years, then save it ideally in a high-yield savings account or CD. If your goal is further out, or you don't have a specific need for the money, then start thinking about investing in something that will grow more, like stocks or bonds.
As a general rule of thumb, you want to aim to invest a total of 10% to 15% of your income each year for retirement. That probably sounds unrealistic now, but you can start small and work your way up to it over time. (Calculate a more specific retirement goal with our retirement calculator.)

- Dividend Stocks & ETFs. ...
- High-Yield Savings Account. ...
- Fractional Shares. ...
- Acorns. ...
- Lend Out The Money. ...
- Fixed-Income Investments. ...
- Start A Website.
But the good news is that most brokerage accounts don't impose a minimum for opening an account, and many allow you to invest on a fractional basis. This means that if you only have $5 to invest with, you can still buy a portion of a share of stock if a full share costs $100 or more.

In a new report, the Milken Institute recommends that Americans start investing for their retirement at age 25. Saving $100 a week as of that tender age will, by the power of compounding, yield $1.1 million by age 65 (assuming a 7% annual rate of return).
For financial goals that are at least three to five years away, the benefits of investing generally outweigh the risks. “When setting aside money for a long-term goal, there is a greater likelihood that if an investment's value decreases, there is still time for it to recover,” Maizes says.

If you make $200 per week, your Yearly salary would be $10,400.
In order to hit your goal of $1 million in 10 years, SmartAsset's savings calculator estimates that you would need to save around $7,900 per month. This is if you're just putting your money into a high-yield savings account with an average annual percentage yield (APY) of 1.10%.
How much will I have if I save $500 a month for 10 years?
Length of Investment
For example, an investor who holds their portfolio for 10 years will put $60,000 into it (10 years of investing x 12 months per year x $500 per month), while an investor who holds the same portfolio for 20 years will contribute $120,000 worth of capital.
When you invest in the stock market, it may take you at least a year to make money if you pick a solid blue-chip stock. This is essentially a stock of a large-cap company that rides market volatility, then earns you good rewards.
If the average dividend yield of your portfolio is 4%, you'd need a substantial investment to generate $3,000 per month. To be precise, you'd need an investment of $900,000. This is calculated as follows: $3,000 X 12 months = $36,000 per year.
Stock | Market capitalization | Dividend yield |
---|---|---|
Gladstone Capital Corp. (ticker: GLAD) | $483 million | 8.6% |
Cross Timbers Royalty Trust (CRT) | $104 million | 11.1% |
Dynex Capital Inc. (DX) | $726 million | 12.2% |
Horizon Technology Finance Corp. (HRZN) | $454 million | 9.7% |
While a 100% equity investment portfolio could make sense for younger investors, decades away from retirement, keeping 100% of your portfolio in stocks as you enter retirement or remain in retirement could introduce unecessary risk.
