How do you tell if an ETF is active or passive?
As the ETF market has evolved, different types of ETFs have been developed. They can be passively managed or actively managed. Passively managed ETFs attempt to closely track a benchmark (such as a broad stock market index, like the S&P 500), whereas actively managed ETFs intend to outperform a benchmark.
How are ETFs and mutual funds different? How are they managed? While they can be actively or passively managed by fund managers, most ETFs are passive investments pegged to the performance of a particular index. Mutual funds come in both active and indexed varieties, but most are actively managed.
For example, the most popular ETF is the S&P 500 “Spyder” ETF. Investors in this ETF make money when the S&P 500 rises, and lose when it falls. This is passive management, which avoids investing in only a limited number of stocks, bonds, or other securities within a market.
What are passive funds? Passive funds track a benchmark index and try to mimic its performance. Passively managed funds include passive index funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and Fund of funds investing in ETFs.
An actively managed fund means a fund manager has more involvement in the decision making, is more active in looking after which stocks and bonds go in and out of a mutual fund portfolio and when. In passively managed funds, the fund manager cannot decide the movement of the underlying assets.
An actively managed ETF is an exchange-traded fund with a manager or team making decisions about the holdings. Generally, an actively managed ETF does not adhere to any passive investment strategy. Many actively managed ETFs track a benchmark index, but managers may deviate from it as they see fit.
However, it might surprise you to learn that there are hundreds of actively managed ETFs that aim to beat the market, provide additional income, or provide exposure to specific assets.

Passively managed ETFs attempt to closely track a benchmark (such as a broad stock market index, like the S&P 500), whereas actively managed ETFs intend to outperform a benchmark.
Actively-managed ETFs are exchange-traded funds that hire specialists to pick and choose assets for investments, rather than seeking to replicate an index or sector. These funds combine the management strategy of a mutual fund with the ability to buy and sell the fund throughout the trading day.
Employs a passively managed, index-sampling strategy. The fund remains fully invested. Low expenses minimize net tracking error.
What is the best passive fund?
Vanguard's LifeStrategy range dominated the most-bought passive fund list in 2022. The top three spots were its 80% Equity, 100% Equity and 60% Equity funds.
Passive investing broadly refers to a buy-and-hold portfolio strategy for long-term investment horizons with minimal trading in the market. Index investing is perhaps the most common form of passive investing, whereby investors seek to replicate and hold a broad market index or indices.
Equity funds, debt, and hybrid mutual funds are popular examples of active funds.
Vanguard is an industry leader in active management
Today, we're the third-largest active fund provider in the world. ** Active funds have been a significant part of our history going back to our start in 1975. In fact, our first 11 funds were actively managed.
Target date funds can be actively managed, passively managed, which means investing in index funds, or a blend of the two strategies. The advantages of target date funds include simplicity and professional management.
While actively managed assets can play an important role in a diverse portfolio, Wharton faculty involved in the program say that even large investors often do best using passive investments for the bulk of their holdings.
That's 12/100ths of one percent. There are only 64 actively managed ETFs, and two of those (two popular PIMCO bond investments) account for over half of all of the assets. Passive ETFs account for 99.88% of the total $1.5 trillion in ETFs. The market share of actively managed ETFs is basically a rounding error.
With 1372 ETFs traded on the U.S. markets, Active Management ETFs have total assets under management of $593.91B. The average expense ratio is 0.71%. Active Management ETFs can be found in the following asset classes: Fixed Income.
There are now well over 100 SPDR ETFs, with a variety of specializations, including U.S. equities, international equities, fixed income, smart beta, commodities, and real assets. Some are even actively managed.
JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF
The largest actively managed ETF in the market, with $33 billion in assets under management, the JPMorgan Equity Premium ETF (NYSEMKT: JEPI) is what is known as a "covered call ETF."
What is the most actively traded ETF?
Symbol | Name | Avg Daily Share Volume (3mo) |
---|---|---|
SOXS | Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3x Shares | 130,581,305 |
SQQQ | ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ | 129,196,617 |
SPY | SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust | 76,819,359 |
TQQQ | ProShares UltraPro QQQ | 74,205,492 |
ETF issuers JPMorgan and Dimensional were the asset managers that saw the biggest boon from flows into active strategies. The JPMorgan Equity Premium Income (JEPI) brought in $12.8 billion, making the fund last year's largest actively managed equity ETF globally, according to Morningstar.
Active ETFs are cost effective, offer daily holdings transparency, can be traded throughout the day at a known price and offer access to virtually every market worldwide.
Actively managed ETFs are rising in popularity, offering investors targeted exposure and tax efficient benefits in a volatile market. In addition to tax efficiency, investors are seeking active management in certain asset classes and strategies, such as fixed income and thematic investing.
ETFs are considered to be low-risk investments because they are low-cost and hold a basket of stocks or other securities, increasing diversification.
